Gadsden, AL – A new chapter in community access to reading has officially begun. The Etowah Chamber was proud to join the Gadsden Public Library and city leaders for a ribbon cutting at the Carver Community Center to celebrate the installation of Alabama’s second-ever LibCabinet, an innovative book vending machine that brings the library directly into the neighborhood.
Located at 1030 Tuscaloosa Avenue, the Carver Community Center is now home to one of two new LibCabinets in Gadsden. The second cabinet is set to open soon at the East Gadsden Community Center on Wilson Avenue. These cutting-edge machines make it easy for anyone with a Gadsden Public Library card to check out books or movies without having to visit the main library branch. Just scan your card, grab your selection, and go.
Library Director Craig Scott shared how the LibCabinets are designed to expand access and provide convenience, especially for residents who may have transportation challenges. “This vending machine effectively acts as a satellite branch of the library,” Scott said. “It’s a simple way to bring literature, learning, and entertainment directly to the people.”
The machines are stocked with books for all ages, from children’s picture books to novels for teens and adults, plus movies. Items checked out from the LibCabinets can be returned to either machine or the downtown library.
Mayor Craig Ford emphasized the importance of evolving with the times. “Libraries are changing. We’ve got to meet people where they are, especially younger generations. Reading makes a difference, and this is one more way to make it accessible.”
The Etowah Chamber applauds this collaborative effort by the City of Gadsden and the Gadsden Public Library to bring innovation and opportunity into local neighborhoods. Plans are already in the works to expand the program to even more locations in the future.
