GADSDEN, AL – Gadsden State Community College’s Charlie Jones has been named Division I Player of the Week by the Alabama Community College Conference. The sophomore pitcher for the Cardinals baseball team earned the honor for his performance on March 14, when the team secured a 4-0 victory over Northwest-Shoals Community College Pioneers.
“Charlie’s nearly flawless outing helped us maintain control throughout the game, contributing to our decisive victory,” said Blake Lewis, head baseball coach.
In the game, Jones delivered an outstanding pitching performance, striking out three batters and allowing just one walk. On the mound he threw a no-hitter for 6 and 2/3 innings before giving up his only hit in the seventh inning with two outs.
On the season, Jones has a 5.25 ERA with two wins and three losses having struck out 13 batters and walked seven in 36 innings of play.
“His impressive outing against Northwest-Shoals marks a significant achievement in what has already been a promising season for him,” Lewis said.
Jones’ selection as Player of the Week makes him the first baseball player to earn this distinction since the team started competing again in 2023 after a decade of not fielding a team.
“Charlie has been a good leader for us and our pitching staff this season,” Lewis said. “He works extremely hard, and I am proud of how much he has grown as a player and a person during his time at Gadsden State. This recognition is a testament to his dedication and development.”
The Gadsden State Cardinals are currently 17-10 overall and 6-6 in the ACCC. They will return to action at noon March 27 when they face off against the Calhoun Community College Warhawks in Decatur.
