Slaten named to Gadsden State’s Executive Cabinet

GADSDEN, AL – Jessica Slaten is the newest member of the Gadsden State Community College Executive Cabinet. She was recently named the dean of Financial and Administrative Services. Slaten, who has been a part of the Gadsden State family for over 27 years, steps into the role after serving as the director of Financial Services since 2022.

In her new role, Slaten will continue to provide strategic leadership in directing and coordinating the College’s financial operations, including managing investments, auxiliary services and business services.

As the dean, Slaten will oversee all financial functions at Gadsden State, ensuring a system of internal accounting and administrative controls is maintained while interpreting and implementing policies and procedures. She said her primary goals include developing and delivering training on financial policies and procedures for budget end users, providing further cross-training for the Financial Services staff and offering ongoing professional development to help the team grow stronger and more cohesive.

“I started my career as an entry-level accountant at Gadsden State in 1998, and I knew right away that God placed me right where I needed to be,” she said. “I’ve seen the College evolve over the years, and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to grow alongside it. As dean, I’m excited to continue building on our team’s strengths and helping Gadsden State fulfill its mission by ensuring that our financial services are aligned with the needs of our students and the institution.”

Beginning in 1998, Slaten has held several roles in Financial Services, including an accountant on the Ayers Campus, restricted funds accountant, financial manager and director of Financial Services. She earned her Bachelor of Science in 1996 and Master of Business Administration in 2000 from Jacksonville State University. In 2008, Slaten graduated from the University of Kentucky’s College Business Management Institute.

Slaten said she is deeply committed to supporting student success at Gadsden State, recognizing the vital role financial services play in creating a positive student experience.

"By offering high-quality and accessible services like payment options, the cafeteria, vending and the bookstore, we can contribute to a satisfying educational experience for all of our students," she said.

As part of her ongoing commitment to collaboration, Slaten plans to work closely with departments like Student Services and Plant Operations to ensure that the College's financial policies are aligned with student needs and institutional goals. She also intends to enhance financial training and stay ahead of changes to purchasing policies.

"Working in financial services within higher education is incredibly rewarding," she said. "It’s about seeing the direct impact our work has on the institution’s success and, most importantly, on our students’ experiences. Whether it’s completing large projects like transitioning to a new ERP system or preparing for an annual audit, every task ultimately strengthens the College and serves our students."

Slaten said her leadership style emphasizes team collaboration, transparency and professional growth.

"As the first female appointed to this position, I want to build on the excellent foundation laid by the men who served as dean before me," she said. "Together, we can continue to elevate the Financial Services Department and maintain the respect and trust we’ve earned with our internal and external stakeholders."

Slaten, a lifelong resident of Etowah County, is married to her husband of 27 years, Lee Slaten. They reside in Glencoe and are active members of First Baptist Church of Hokes Bluff, where she teaches an adult small group and leads Bible studies for the Women’s Ministry. She has served on the United Way allocation panel for 17 years and is a current member of The Bridge’s Board of Directors.
