Tucked away in the heart of Southside, Alabama, Smokeneck Farm & Garden is more than just a store—it’s a full-blown local experience. We recently stopped by to visit George Illif, the charismatic owner behind this unique community-centered general store, and we were met with warmth, laughter, and shelves packed with local flavor.
From the moment you walk in, you're welcomed like family. Smokeneck carries everything from farm and garden supplies to one of the largest selections of Amish goods in Etowah County—think cheeses, jams, jellies, and even what George calls “Amish crack,” a crispy okra snack you have to try to believe.
But it doesn’t stop there. George proudly supports over a dozen local vendors, offering everything from handmade soaps and bird feeders to local coffee, honey, hot sauce, pickles, and more. Seasonal items like fresh eggs, local meats, produce, and baked bread also rotate through the shelves.
It’s clear this place is built on heart and hard work. George and his wife Patsy were inspired by a trip to an Amish market in Pennsylvania and decided to bring that same charm back home. Since then, Smokeneck has grown into a hub for community connection—complete with friendly shop cats Smokey and Fancy and even a scholarship for local FFA students.
Whether you need animal feed, gardening supplies, or just want to browse and chat, Smokeneck Farm & Garden is a place where you’ll feel right at home.
